Rats are various medium-sized, long-tailed rodents of the superfamily Muroidea. Rats are members of the genus Rattus, the most important of which to humans are the black rat, Rattus rattus, and the brown rat, Rattus norvegicus

How to identify a Rat Infestation

Rat Droppings - Rat droppings are found in concentrated areas and they produce up to 40 droppings per night. Brown rat droppings are dark brown in a tapered, spindle shape. It is about 9mm - 14mm long. They resemble a large grain of rice.
Footprints (running tracks) - Rats leave foot and tail marks in dusty, lesser used areas of buildings.

Rub Marks - Rats have a poor eyesight and use established routes along boards and walls. Dust and grease on them leave dark marks on both objects and surfaces they repeatedly brush against. Scratching sound - Black or Roof Rats are good climbers and can climb to the roof and ducts. Hearing scratching noises at night from above may suggest their presence. Brown rats are no good climbers and hence they are found in ground level or under decks and floors.
Damage - Rats have teeth that grow continuously. They cut on wood and plastic to keep them trim. One may notice ripped packages, food storages, wood, plastic to identify a rat infestation.

We at GingerBay Pest Control use two step approach for Rat Control in Bengaluru, Chennai, Ernakulam and Coimbatore

  1. Inspection : Inspection is an important first step in getting rid of rats. Once you know the location of the rats, you can set traps or place bait. Exclusion is an important rodent control technique. It will get rid of the rats by making it difficult for them to enter the home or structure. Rats are easier to exclude than mice because rats a typically larger. Mice can enter an opening as small as 3/8" wide. All openings greater that 1/4" should be sealed to exclude mice. For rats, all openings greater that 1/2" should be sealed.
  2. Trapping or Baiting : Trapping does have some advantages over baiting. It provides an alternative for those who do not want to place rodenticides. If the rat population is small enough, trapping can yield quick results when done properly. Finally, trapping ensures that you can dispose of the dead rats before their odor becomes a problem in an inaccessible area. Rodenticides are poison baits for rat control and should be used in areas where domestic animals and children can't access them. For protection against accidental poisoning, we use tamper-resistant bait stations that hold the baits in place and keep children and pets out. Rat Baits come in pellets, meal, and block forms.
