Infestations of bed bugs in Bengaluru can occur in furnished rooms, such as those in hostels, hotels and shared apartments, or rented houses and freehold properties. They can remain in these locations for quite some time if the environment is left undisturbed or the sheets unchanged for extended periods. Before moving into a property, you should always consider and investigate whether or not there are any signs of a bed bug infestation.

However, even those who maintain their rooms to a good standard, following good hygiene patterns and practices, are not immune to bed bugs. That’s why knowing there is a pest control service you can count on in the area is so important. And for Bengaluru, Chennai, Ernakulam and Coimbatore GingerBay Pest Control is your one stop destination.

Adult bed bugs measure at approximately 5mm in length, and their bodies are flat and oval in shape. The shapes differ slightly in males and females - the males have more of a pointed shape, and the females have more rounded abdomens. Their usual colour is brown, but after each blood meal, they turn purple. Bed bugs can survive many months without feeding, and it only takes one full blood meal for their nymphs to move on to the next stage of their five-stage development.

Facts about Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are very efficient hitchhikers and easily transported, for instance in second hand furniture, clothes and travel bags. Once they are introduced into a room, they often spread throughout the whole building. Other than the name suggests, they are hiding everywhere inside the room and are not only confined to the bed.

Bed bugs are 4 to 5 mm big and have a flattened reddish body. Their mouthparts are build to pinch and bite. They live in cracks and crevices and are mostly active at night, when they are searching for prey in order to get a blood meal. This meal takes about three to ten minutes, during this time saliva is injected.

A female lays about 200 to 500 eggs in clutches of 10 to 50 eggs in a period of two months. There are five nymphal stages and for each stage one blood meal is required in order to mold. Under good conditions, adults may live up to one year.

Problems caused by Bedbugs

Bedbug bites cannot usually be felt until some minutes or hours later. Although the bite of the bedbug is painless, many people develop an allergic reaction to the saliva injected by the bedbugs. In some cases the swelling will be severe. People commonly respond to bed bug infestations and their bites with anxiety, stress, and insomnia. Persons staying in heavily infested rooms might suffer anaemia from too many bites.

Bedbugs are infected with some 25 different disease organisms, such as plague and relapsing fever, but there has been no proof of transmission yet. However it might be possible under certain circumstances. As they are easily transported and spread inside buildings, bedbugs are mostly a problem of institutions with a frequent change of visitors, such as buses, hospitals, hotels and similar places. In infested rooms bedbugs produce a very distinct odour and usually one can see small dots of their feces inside the room.

Implications of problems

The presence of bedbugs causes great distress to humans who are staying in infested rooms. Bedbugs do immediate harm to people and if left untreated might render rooms unusable. This could be very costly for affected businesses, such as hotels or hospitals

The distinct smell of bedbug infested rooms might deter potential customers. In addition to this the feces of bedbugs will stain walls, which makes repainting necessary. If it becomes public, the presence of bedbugs will damage the reputation of the affected business.
